THE THUNDERBIRDS FACE THE CONTRA COSTA COMETS MONDAY JANUARY 31, 2011

The Thunderbirds welcome the Contra Costa Comets to Merritt College Monday January 31, 2011. The Women play at 5:30pm and the Men play at 7:30. Currently the Thunderbirds are 5-4 in conference play and 16-9 overall. Please come and support the Thunderbirds in there final 2 home games.

General Admission is $5 any fan wearing blue or gold gets in for $3 and groups of 5 or more get in for $2 each person.

Side note: Dr "C" the California Junior College Basketball Guru will be in the building reporting on the Thunderbirds!

YUBA SLIPS BY THE THUNDERBIRDS 75-73

In one of the better games the Thunderbirds have played in there last 10 games Yuba college was able to slip by the Thunderbirds by the score 75-73. The Thunderbirds went into halftime trailing 35-30. In the 2nd half the Thunderbirds played determined and had a 3 point lead in the last minute. In the final minute a lack defensive communication allowed Yuba college to take a un-contested 3 point shot tying the game. The Thunderbirds then came down in there next possession and turned it over allowing Yuba college to come down and score putting Yuba college up by 2 points. The Thunderbirds in there next possession didn't score and had to foul. Yuba hit 1 out of 2 in the bonus and the Thunderbirds tried a desperation 3 point shot but were fouled before getting the shot off. The Thunderbirds hit the first free throw and attempted to miss the second and tried to tip the ball in unsuccessfully and in the end the Thunderbirds fall to Yuba College by 2 points 75-73.

Saajid Polite 19 points 6 assists and 5 rebounds.

Richard Walker had a double-double of 14 points and 10 rebounds.

Roman Robinson had 10 points and 5 rebounds.

William Tolefree had 10 points and 7 rebounds.

Joshua Hatcher had 10 points and 5 rebounds

Nick Capiti added 10 points.


If the Thunderbirds are able to build on this game they will have a opportunity to redeem themselves in there final 3 conference games as well as in the Bay Valley Conference Tournament at the conclusion of the season. This will open the opportunity for a possible California State Tournament birth!

THE THUNDERBIRDS COME HOME TO FACE THE YUBA COLLEGE 49ERS

This Friday January 28, 2011 the Thunderbirds welcome the Yuba College 49er's to the Merritt College Gymnasium. (This is the biggest game left on the Bay Valley Conference schedule for the Thunderbirds).The Thunderbirds are currently 5-3 in league play and 16-8 overall. For the Thunderbirds to be successful in this contest they must play with passion and intelligence in all phases of the game. Especially with there defense, rebounding, free throws and limiting there turnovers will give them a opportunity to be successful.

We look forward to outstanding attendance of the Merritt College Fan base and community. The women play at 5:30pm and the Men play at 7:30pm.


Quick note: Any Merritt College Thunderbird fans wearing royal blue or gold get in for $2 each and groups of 5 or more get in for $1 each. General Admission is $5.

THE THUNDERBIRDS DEFEAT THE NAPA VALLEY COLLEGE STORM 68-60

The Thunderbirds were are able to go until hostile territory and defeat the Napa Valley College Storm. Final score Thunderbirds 68 Storm 60. The Thunderbirds won both halves of the contest even though they shot poorly from the free throw line at 44%. The Thunderbirds defense and timely rebounding enabled the Thunderbirds to collect the victory.

Saajid Polite led all scorers with 17 points, 5 rebounds and 4 assists.

William Tolefree had 16 points and 7 rebounds.

Roman Robinson had 14 points, 5 rebounds and 2 steals.

The Thunderbirds lose to the Mendocino College Eagles 104 -96

The Thunderbirds traveled 2 1/2 hours up to Ukiah, California to take on the Mendocino College Eagles and were defeated 104-96. The Thunderbirds consistently missed layups, turned over the basketball 21 times, shot poor from the ft line at 66% 21/32 and allowed a season high 104 points. This week of Bay Valley Conference play is the most important of the week of the entire season. What is the positive that can be taken from the game? In final 10 minutes of the contest the Thunderbirds displayed solid defense which enabled them to dwindle the lead down to 6. The Thunderbirds have too regroup quickly as they face the Napa Valley College Storm in Napa Valley this Wednesday January 26, 2011.

The Thunderbirds were led by:

Nick Capiti led the Thunderbirds with 21 points 3 rebounds and 3 assists.

Roman Robinson had 19 points and 5 rebounds.

Saajid Polite had 17 points and 10 assists another double-double.

William Tolefree had 16 points and 8 rebounds.


The Thunderbirds have a challenging test as they play 2 games in three days against the top teams in the Bay Valley Conference standings......

PTV SPORTS WILL BE TELEVISING THIS FRIDAY NIGHT'S HOME GAME VS ALAMEDA COLLEGE

The Thunderbirds looked forward to playing at home against there cross town rival the Alameda College Cougars. The Thunderbirds controlled the game and cruised to a 26 point victory. The Thunderbirds improved there conference record to 4-2 and 15-7 overall in front of the home crowd, as well as being showcased on Peralta TV Sports. The Thunderbirds had 5 players in double figures and 10 in the scoring column.

Will Tolefree led the Thunderbirds with 16 points and 8 rebounds.

Joshua Hatcher had 15 points and 8 rebounds.

Nick Capiti had 14 points and 7 assists.

Tyler Idowu had 12 points and 6 rebounds.

Roman Robinson added 12 points.

The Thunderbirds Defeat Contra Costa College 79-64

The Thunderbirds start the beginning of week 3 strong by defeating the Contra Costa Comets by a score of Comets 64 Thunderbirds 79.

The Thunderbirds were led by:

William Tolefree led the Thunderbirds with 16 points, 6 rebounds and 5 steals.

Tyler Idowu had another double-double of 15 points, 11 rebounds and 5 steals.

Joshua Hatcher had a double-double of 10 points and 10 rebounds.

Roman Robinson added 10 points.



The Thunderbirds look forward to coming home to take on there cross town rival the Alameda College Cougars. This conference game is a pivotal for both teams as the Thunderbirds expect a great crowd on hand as Peralta TV Sports will be televising the game. The women take on the Laney College Eagles at 5:30pm and the Men take on the Alameda College Cougars at 7:30pm. 2-0 In Week 2 Of Bay Valley Conference Play!

The Thunderbirds have got back on right track in week 2 of Bay Valley Conference play, with 2 wins against the Solano College Falcons and the Marin College Mariners. On Wednesday January 12, 2011 the Thunderbirds beat Solano College by the score of 87-63. Then on Friday January 14, 2011 the Thunderbirds beat Marin College at Marin College by the score of 71-57. The Thunderbirds are currently 2-2 in league play and 13-7 overall.


On Wednesday January 12, 2011 vs Solano the Thunderbirds were led by:

had a double-double of 23 points and 11 rebounds.

Saajid Polite had a double-double of 16 points and 11 assists.

Joshua Hatcher had 14 points and 8 rebounds.

Richard Walker chipped in 10 points and 8 rebounds.


On Friday January 14, 2011 vs Marin the Thunderbirds were led by:

had a double-double of 15 points and 11 rebounds.

Saajid Polite had 9 points, 7 assists and 5 rebounds.

Contrail Dixon chipped in 8 points and shot 85% 6/7 ft line.



The Thunderbirds continue to play on the road headed to Richmond Wednesday January 19, 2011 to face the Contra Costa Comets. The women play at 5:30pm and the Men play at 7:30pm. Then on Friday January 21, 2011 the Thunderbirds come home to take on there crosstown rival the Alameda College Cougars. The women play at 5:30pm and the Men play at 7:30pm. The Thunderbirds take on the Solano College Falcons Wednesday Night January 12, 2011 at Home.

The Thunderbirds have a new week of Bay Valley Conference play in which the Thunderbirds take on the Solano College Falcons this wednesday January 12, 2011. The Thunderbirds are 0-2 in conference play but stand overall at 11-7. The Thunderbirds look to get back on the winning track and hope for strong fan attendance at the 2nd home game played at the newly beautifully renovated Merritt College Gymnasium. The women play at 5:30pm and the Men play at 7:30pm. Please come and support your Merritt College Thunderbirds.

The Thunderbirds must regroup after losing to the Mustangs by 2

The first week of the Bay Valley Conference season was a very unpleasant one for the the Thunderbirds finishing 0-2. The Thunderbirds allowed the Los Medanos College Mustangs to slipped by them by 2 points. The Thunderbirds controlled the game by 11 points for 3 quarters. Numerous miscues and poor discipline on offense and defense in the 4 quarter created the final result Mustangs 68 Thunderbirds 66. All people affiliated with sports know that a season is not a race but a journey. For the Thunderbirds to resurrect a good start to the beginning of there season they must take 1 game at a time approach in the Bay Valley Conference. Discipline and attention to detail is a must for the Thunderbirds to reap the benefits at the close of this year's season and beyond. The Thunderbirds record stands at 11-7

The Thunderbirds Stunned in Home Opener

1/5/2010

The Thunderbirds opened the renovated Merritt College Gymnasium and Bay Valley Conference season on a sour note as the Thunderbirds were upset by Mendocino College. The game was a offensive shootout, with both teams lacking solid defense. However on this night it left the Thunderbirds on the short end of the stick Mendocino 95 Thunderbirds 86. The Thunderbirds Conference record stands at 0-1 with a overall record of 11-6....


William Tolefree led the Thunderbirds in scoring and rebounding with 22 points, 8 rebounds, 3 assists and 3 steals.

Saajid Polite had a hot 1st half but cooled downed in the 2nd half (cramping) finishing with 15 points, 8 assists and 5 rebounds.

Joshua Hatcher had 14 points, 7 rebounds and 3 assists.

Tyler Idowu had 12 points, 7 rebounds and 3 blocks.

Elliott Herald had 10 points, 5 rebounds and 3 assists.

For the Thunderbirds to have a opportunity to win the Bay Valley Conference they must defend, rebound and shoot free throws consistently. When they accomplish these goals they will be a top of the Bay Valley Conference. Merritt College appreciates all who came last night to support Merritt College Athletics. The Start Of Bay Valley Confrence Play

HAPPY NEW YEAR TO ALL!

The New Year brings the Thunderbirds a beautifully renovated Merritt College Gymnasium and a new season in the Bay Valley Conference. With solid preseason play and a record of 11-5 the Thunderbirds are ready to compete to win the Bay Valley Conference Championship. The Thunderbirds open up the season at home for there 1st time vs the Mendocino College Eagles Wednesday January 5, 2010 at 7:30. To increase fan support any fans wearing blue or gold get in the game for $3 dollars. Fans that bring groups of 5 or more get in for $2 dollars each. In addition there will be give aways and other competitions at half time of all home games. Merritt College wants the entire community to come and support Merritt College Athletics.
